Nadal had gone from being a favorite in his matches after a few of losses, and now Ruud is the favorite at -220.

Nadal Competes for Pride

The 36-year-old began his campaign against American Taylor Fritz but was unable to take a set off him. Fritz just seized total charge as the first set went to tiebreak, and Nadal was unable to make up. He eventually lost 6(3)-7(7), 1-6.

In his second round, he faced the emerging Canadian superstar Felix Auger-Aliassime, but was unable to generate momentum at the Tennis Nitto ATP Finals. Auger-Aliassime was playing tight, crisp tennis and managed to break Nadal’s serve early in the match to go ahead. Surprisingly, it was Nadal’s serve that was losing him a lot of points, and he couldn’t understand out why.

Nadal went on to lose 3-6, 4-6, knocking him out of the last four.

Ruud Keeps Going

Unlike his opponent, the 23-year-old has reached the tournament’s last four. He began his tournament against Felix Auger-Aliassime, whom he defeated 7(7)-6(4), 6-4, and then faced Taylor Fritz.

Ruud began out strong against Fritz, getting out to a big lead, but the two traded points back and forth at the Tennis Nitto ATP Finals. The match took three sets to resolve, but Ruud managed to win with 14 aces and just three double faults. His opponent managed 15 aces to no double faults, but Ruud outplayed him in other areas of the game. Ruud eventually won 6-3, 4-6, 7(8)-6. (6).

Second Career Conference

Nadal and Ruud will clash for the second time in their careers and the second time this year. Their only other meeting this year was in the finals of the French Open at the Tennis Nitto ATP Finals, which Nadal won and claimed his 14th French Open championship.
